The Seven Major Chakras

First Chakra - Base Chakra

Petals: Four

Sanskrit name: Muladhara

According to Hinduism within this chakra resides the kundalini shakti , the great spiritual potential, waiting to be aroused and brought back up to the source from which it originated, Brahman. Muladhara is the base from which the 3 main psychic channels, nadis, ida, pingala and sushumna, emerge

Meaning: Root Support

Location: Base of the spine.

Colour: Red, signifying passion for life; or black, representing stability or grounding.

Element: Earth

Function: The earth chakra is the centre of our survival and security and also relates to our potential. If it is imbalanced, our survival instincts are weakened, we are not grounded and do not have a strong physical will to be on earth. We will experience feelings of "spaciness" and lack courage, stamina and strength. Physical signs of imbalnce are manifested as problems with the feet, ankles and knees, lower back and bowels. Sciatica or haemorrhoids are common if the base chakra is blocked.

Chakra stones: Mostly red and black crystals - fire agate, bloodstone, boji stone, red calcite, carnelian, cuprite, garnet, haematite, ruby, black sapphire and black tourmaline.

Second Chakra - Sacral Chakra

Petals: Six

Sanskrit name: Svadhisthana

Swadhisthana is associated with the unconscious, and with emotion. It is closely related to Muladhara in that Swadhisthana is where the different samskaras (imprints left on the subconscious mind by experience) lie dormant and Muladhara is where these samskaras find expression. Swadhisthana contains unconscious desires, especially sexual desire, and it is said that to raise the kundalini above Swadhisthana is extremely difficult for this reason.

Meaning: Seat of vital force/sweetness

Location: Lower abdomen a few inches below the naval.

Colour: Orange representing creativity and wisdom.

Element: Water

Function The sacral chakra is related to creativity and emotion. If it is unbalanced we experience problems forming relationships. The reproductive organs may not function properly, leading to infertility. As this chakra is connected to the water element, they may be problems with the kidneys, bladder or prostate gland.

Chakra stones: Orange stones such as carnelian, amber, orange calcite, citrine, golden labradorite, tangerine quartz, thulite and topaz.

Third Chakra - Solar Plexus

Petal: Ten

Sanskrit name: Manipura

Manipura is associated with dynamism, energy, and will-power. It is associated with the power of fire, and digestion. Manipura is said to radiate and distribute prana to the rest of the body.

Meaning: Power Chakra/ Lustrous gem

Location: Between the umbilicus and the solar plexus.

Colour: Yellow

Element: Fire

Function: The solar plexus chakra is the source of our personal power and represents our analytical thought and intellectual activity. It is related to energy, assimilation and the metabolism. The solar plexus enables us to transform our desires, emotions and ambitions into action, so an imbalance in this area leads to a lack of confidence and emotional instability. Other problems may be low self-esteem, addictions and an inability to relax. When it is healthy, it gives us energy, effectiveness and spontaneity. Physical signs of problems include digestive troubles, diabetes, eating disorders,allergies and chronic fatigue.

Chakra stones: Yellow stones such as amber, amblygonite, ametrine, golden beryl, yellow jasper, smoky quartz, yellow sapphire, sunstone, tiger's eye and yellow tourmaline.

Fourth Chakra - Heart Chakra

Petals: Twelve

Sanskrit name: Anahata

In Anahata, one is making decisions, 'following your heart', based upon one's higher self, and not from the unfulfilled emotions and desires of lower nature. The wish-fulfilling tree, kalpa taru, resides here, symbolising the ability to manifest whatever you wish to happen in the world. It is also associated with love and compassion, charity to others.

Meaning: Unstuck

Location: Centre of the chest

Colour: Green (healing and balance) or pink (love and compassion)

Element: Air

Function: This, the middle chakra, is related to social acceptance and is the chakra of love and compassion. It also works to integrate opposites in the psyche - male and female, ego and unity, persona and shadow. Its colour is either green, which represents healing and balance, or pink which symbolosies love. If this chakra is blocked, individuals are likely to be depressed, unable to love themselves and have difficulties forming relationships. Physical manifestations of trouble include circulatory disorders, blood pressure and heart problems, including asthma or lung disease and poor immune function.

Chakra stones: Green or pink stones, including amblygonite, green aventurine, green calcite, charoite, chrysoprase, pink danburite, emerald, jade, green or pink fluorite, jasper, kunzite, malachite, morganite, peridot, green or rose quartz and watermelon tourmaline.

Fifth Chakra - Throat Chakra

Petals: Sixteen

Sanakrit name: Visshuda

Vishuddha is positioned at the neck region and it has sixteen petals corresponding to the Sanskrit vowels.

Vishuddha is associated with the faculty of higher discrimination, between choosing what is right and wrong, and it is associated with creativity and self-expression. It is known as the 'poison and nectar' centre, closely related to the Bindu chakra, and the secret of immortality is said to reside there. When Vishuddha is closed, we undergo decay and death. When it is open, negative experience is transformed into wisdom and learning.

Meaning: Purification

Location: Throat

Colour: Blue

Element: Sound/Ether

Function: The throat chakra is related to communication (both verbal and non-verbal), self-expression and creativity. A blockage in this chakra leads to an inability to express one's feelings and ideas. In physical terms, throat or hearing problems, neck and shoulder pain, and either stuttering or non-stop chatter signify that the throat chakra needs healing.

Chakra stones: Blue stones such as blue lace agate, amazonite, aquamarine, azeztulite, azurite, blue calcite, blue chalcedony, chrysocolla, blue fluorite, lapis lazuli, larimar, malachite, aqua aura quartz, blue sapphire, shattuckite, blue tourmaline and turquoise.

Sixth Chakra - Third Eye Chakra

Petals: Two

Sanskrit name: Ajna

The Ajna chakra is positioned at the eyebrow region and it has two petals, said to represent the psychic channels Ida and Pingala, which meet here with the central Shushumna channel, before rising to the crown chakra, Sahasrara. On the left hand petal is the letter 'ham', and on the right the letter 'ksham', the bija mantras for Shiva and Shakti respectively.

Ajna is considered the chakra of the mind. When something is seen in the mind's eye, or in a dream, it is being 'seen' by Ajna.

Meaning: To command or know

Location: Centre of forehead (representing the search for and attainment of spiritual purpose)

Colour: Indigo

Element: Light

Function: The third eye or brow chakra enables us to see clearly, not only in physical terms, but perhaps more importantly, on an intuitive level, it enables us to reflect on 'the bigger picture', to gain a deeper understanding of our psychic abilities and to gain inner wisdom. Physical signs of an imbalance in this chakra include headaches, dizziness, eye disorders and nightmares. Psychological problems include hallucinations, living in a fantasy world and lack of imagination and intuition.

Chakra stones: Mainly Indigo, including amethyst, angelite, azeztulite, azurite, blue calcite, charoite, purplre fluorite, iolite, lapis lazuli, larimar, lepidolite, shattuckite, tanzanite and turquoise.

Seventh Chakra - Crown Chakra

Petals: One thousand

Sanskrit name: Sahasrara

Sahasrara is positioned above the head or at the top of it and it has 1000 petals which are arranged in 20 layers each of them with 50 petals.

Sahasrara chakra symbolizes detachment from illusion; an essential element in obtaining supramental higher consciousness of the truth that one is all and all is one.

Meaning: To multiply by a thousand

Location: Top of head ( anterior fontanelle of newborn babies)

Colour: white signifying purity, perfection or bliss, or violet representing enlightenment.

Element: Thought/knowing

Function: The crown chakra represents our connection to a world beyond our own, to the Universal Consciousness, a timeless place of all-knowing. It is our centre of spirituality and enlightenment and is related to self-knowledge. When well developed, individuals demonstrate wisdom, understanding, spirituality and bliss. Physical signs of problems are epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, memory disorders, obsessiveness and confussion.

Chakra stones: Mostly clear or violet stones, such as amethyst, ametrine, angelite, azeztulite, charoite, danburite, diamond, lepidolite, phenacite, clear quartz, selenite, sugilite and tanzanite.
