If it’s not fire, it’s flood. Five years to the day after the Montecito mudslides that killed 23 people, Santa Barbara is experiencing torrential downpours. Highway 101 northbound and Highway 154, the only routes to the north, have already been closed due to mud and debris flows.

Most of the time, fire and flood are not clear and present dangers. But the possibility always lurks just under surface awareness. Nowhere in the world is exempt from the ravages of weather and the natural behavior of planetary processes. Hurricanes, torrential rains, cyclones, wildfires.
