A Photographer Takes Stunning Portraits Of The Indigenous Maori People

Jimmy Nelson is a British photographer and journalist who is perhaps most famous for his work taking portraits of tribal and indigenous peoples. In 2009, he started a long-term project called "Before They Pass Away," as an effort to immortalize people whose way of life is gradually eroding thanks to increased contact with the outside world.

Using funding he received from billionaire Dutch investor and philanthropist Marcel Boekhoorn, Nelson traveled the world and photographed people from 35 different indigenous tribes. Here are some of the remarkable portraits he took of the Maori people of New Zealand.

To find out more about this incredible project, see more pictures, or buy the book, check out the official “Before They Pass Away” website.
