Many of these pieces of land are “sinking” and disappearing leaving people in danger with nowhere to escape. One of the most recent examples is the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti. This current problem has led over 200,000 people to try/attempt to find shelter in their neighboring land of the Dominican Republic. This one example is a small look into future problems of rising sea levels causing mass migrations. In most Pacific islands, the inhabitants, agricultural land, tourist resorts, and infrastructure are all connected in the coastal zones; in turn leaving them very vulnerable to any rise in sea level. The International Organization for Migration has estimated that in the worst case scenario, as many as 50 million to 350 million people may have to migrate from their island nations to obtain safety
