I have been wondering that too.
I usually had few cans of beer "For a bad day" but now when i even think about it, it makes me feel sick. Instead, i started drinking lot's of water.
Alchohol distorts the mind/body complex and clouds connection to Spirit even more than the usual "veil". However, deeper insights can come in the period referred to as "hangover" (just ask any poet/artist). This is the pendulum moving towards the "other polarity" in order to balance out the "distortion experience" of being "drunk". Often the "hangover" is accompanied by unexplainable "angst/anxiety" (even if something "stupid" was not even done the night before. hehe). This is because the "veil" is somewhat weakened and reality is thus seen somewhat clearer, and in a stark contrast to the "drunken experience" from last night.
The "high" or "feeling good" experience of alchohol (and other drugs also) is simply due to the fact that you are artificially brought into the Present or "Eternal Now". I used to drink a whole lot before I "woke up", and drinking actually was sort of like a meditation to me. It artificially takes away the past/future, and you find yourself in a state of being in the Now. In this state there are no worries anymore as they are all connected to past/future. Thus, you feel free and great for a while...
Meditation and Awareness replaces the "need" for the drunken experience, and the great thing about it is that these things make permanent changes whithout any hangover. Moving more and more into the Now is all the "high" you will ever need. Drugs like mushrooms/LSD etc. also takes you into the Now, but these drugs also artificially breaks down the barrier between the physical plane and the Astral/dream plane. Drugs are artificial and the positive changes they induce does not last. The negative changes they induce can be lasting however...
Another downside of being drunk is that it leaves you much more vulnerable to the "ego-parasites" which in severe cases can completely "possess" an individual and make him/her do things during "periods of blackout" that they would normally not do. Even violence and murder/rape etc. I still like a beer or some wine once in a while. But I do not drink "heavily" anymore... At least not very often:>hehe.
Love,
Sanat
