Thank you for contacting The Coca-Cola Company, Unknown. We appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns.
Please be assured that Coca-Cola brand soft drinks do not contain any harmful substances. Diet Coke and all Coca-Cola brand products are wholesome beverages manufactured in compliance with the federal law governing food safety and labeling, the laws of all the states, and the laws of over 200 countries throughout the world where they are sold.
Aspartame is a low-Calorie sweetener made primarily of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Amino acids, including the two amino acids in aspartame, are the building blocks for proteins and are found widely in nature in both plants and animals. The components of aspartame are found naturally in a number of foods. Milk (8 oz., 403 mg) and chicken (3 oz., 1,026 mg) contain more phenylalanine than a soft drink sweetened with aspartame (8 oz., ranges from approximately 10 to 85 mg). Aspartame is 180 to 200 times sweeter than sugar.
Prior to its approval, aspartame underwent one of the most thorough scientific reviews ever conducted. Regulatory bodies consider it one of the most widely tested ingredients in the food supply. The safety of aspartame has been affirmed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and leading independent health groups such as the American Medical Association.
