What is the true meaning of the word "apocalypse"? Most think of it as being synonymous with armageddon. The end of the world. Let's go to the dictionary.
That's what you get at dictionary.com. Often the words we use in common speech have VERY different originations. From the Greek "apokalupsis" it means revelation; from the word "apokaluptein" it means to uncover.
I heard someone once define it as knowledge revealed. In a sense, that could be the end of the world, because if you live your life in a web of lies, then having knowledge revealed would pretty much destroy your conception of the world. It reminds me of the phrase "it's the end of the world as we know it" and that seems to pretty much sum up to me what armageddon is really about... the end of lies.
I know quite a few people who first started learning and waking up about U.S. foreign policy and history in their attempt to understand what was going on with the phony War in Iraq--it's seriously the first time they began to realize that the world as they knew it was not as innocent as it seemed. The deceptions of history so perfectly being revealed by a liar trying to "bring it on." Hey G, we don't want YOUR version of armageddon, but in a way, you're giving us ours.
This process of knowledge being revealed is going to continue in the coming years, until all humans are finally forced to admit to their painful self-deceit. But it's all good in the end, because the truth really WILL set you free, even though it might piss you off at first!
Another example of the deeper definition of apocalypse comes from a new understanding of the Lord's Prayer. (That text can be found at the bottom of this essay.) I have casually studied (and hope to further deepen my understanding, so check back here for updates) what happened in the year 325 when the Roman Emporer Constantine brought together the Council of Nicea, forming the basis for many of the traditions of Christianity as we know it today. Here is my understanding of what went on:
Perceiving a threat to an Empire in total control of the Western world from a new religion that preached personal empowerment so liberating that it gave its followers a spiritual connection great enough to cause brutal martyrdom to be met with rapturous joy, Constantine made a decisive and strategically brilliant move... he co-opted the movement.
The Council of Nicea was formed to find out what was most empowering about this new Christian movement, then sift off its most potent gems into secret schools (thereby hiding the knowledge) and then glean what could be used to blend into their existing power base in order to keep the movement from totally unseating their control, as it was originally destined to do. While the broad history of the co-opting of that truly revolutionary, early Christianity into a distorted form meant to dominate through fear and manipulation is outside the scope of this essay, the concept can be understood simply with the following with a more direct translation of the Lord's Prayer, now quoted below:The Lord's Prayer
Translated from Aramaic into English
Rather than from Aramaic to Greek to Latin to English
O cosmic Birther of all radiance and vibration
soften the ground of our being and carve out a space
within us where Your Presence can abide.
Fill us with your creativity so that we may be empowered
to bear the fruit of Your mission.
Let each of our actions bear fruit in accordance with our desire.
Endow us with the wisdom to produce
and share what each being needs to grow and flourish.
Untie the tangled threads of destiny that bind us,
as we release others from the entanglement of past mistakes.
Do not let us be seduced by that which would divert us from our true
purpose, but illuminate the opportunities of the present moment.
For You are the round and the fruitful vision, the birth-power and
fulfillment, as all is gathered and made whole once again.
Quite a different reading of that prayer, huh? Imagine the religion we would had today if that movement had never been distorted by a corrupt empire.
Eventually I hope to expand on the themes touched upon above. My ultimate goal is to help people to see that the chaos engulfing the world in this present moment can be interpreted from the TRUE definition of apocalypse, as we all begin to come to terms with the lies and deceptions that are being spoken in our name.
