<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Maiandra GD";">To the Maya, Cimi was a lucky day to be born on as it was celebrated as a day of transformation
rather than a day of death. In the Popul Vuh, the Hero Twins defeat the
Lords of Death in a
ballgame which takes place in the Underworld. The Twins are
ordered by the Lords of Death
to perform many tasks. They are tricked by the
Lords and lose their lives, only to be reborn by
transforming themselves. Thus
the Maya celebrated this day as a lucky day of transformation
wisdom.
<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Maiandra GD";">In ancient times, Death was also referred to as the
direction North, which symbolized the Ancestors.
Seeking wisdom and guidance from the Ancestors was at the heart of Mayan ritual
practice. According
to Kenneth Johnson in Jaguar
Wisdom, “In the day-sign Death, we become one with those who went before
us, and we partake of their wisdom. In the human body, Death is associated with
the crown chakra, the sacred center through which solar enlightenment and
ancestral wisdom may best enter
into our own consciousness. Hence, this
day-sign bestows upon us the ancestral wisdom that guides
us through all our
transformations.”
aware of all possibilities in each moment of creation. We are now ready to
exercise a choice: to move into a
vibration of listening to our intuition and allowing our ancestral wisdom to
guide us, or to stay with old patterns of the ego and the rational mind. If we
choose the
path of transformation, the old patterns no longer serving us are
of ancient knowledge; 7 Eb (Road), the vital
energy that moves us forward on the
Trecenas are thirteen-day periods in the Tzolkin. Each Trecena starts with the Number 1, but with a different Day Glyph. As a wave of the Thirteen Heavens, the underlying energy is governed by the
First Day Glyph of the Trecena and influences all thirteen successive Day Glyphs. Being aware of the predominant energy of the First Day of the Trecena, we can align our intentions with that energy
This Trecena starts with 1 Men (Eagle): Free Spirited, Ambitious, Self Confident, Bringer of Faith and Knowledge, Global Visionary.
According to Maya legend, the sun was an Eagle and one of the most powerful day signs. In Mesoamerican myth, everything has two aspects or faces, so the Eagle carries the symbolism of
the moon as well as the sun. On the one hand, a young moon goddess representing budding and flowering, and on the other hand, an old moon goddess representing ancient wisdom. The Yucatec
word “Men” means “the wise one.” This lunar goddess was also called Eagle Woman as she wore a headdress of eagle feathers. According to Kenneth Johnson in Jaguar Wisdom, “Thus sun and moon,
male and female, combine in one archetype: When the sun rises, he is ‘soaring eagle’; when the sun
sets, he is ‘falling eagle’. The moon wears the sun in her hair. The Eagle is the sign of the spiritual warrior, whose heart is pure like the heart of the sun; but underneath the bright and shining glory
of the daytime sun lies an older, subtler archetype of quiet wisdom: First Mother, the moon, the
crone of wisdom.”

Another representation of the Trecena is that of a creative wave beginning at 1 and ending at 13,
with the numbers 6, 7 and 8 representing the crest of the wave. The crest could be interpreted as
a strong influential energy, although the underlying influence on the Trecena would still rest in the beginning. In this Trecena, the crest falls on 6 Ahau (Sun/Flower/Light Lord), 7 Imix (Crocodile),
and 8 Ik (Wind). Ahau represents the achievement of spiritual enlightenment. Imix represents
the primal basic instincts of existence on the material plane. Ik represents the catalyst for change
on both levels. This strong combination of spiritual and material change encourages us to seek
higher levels of consciousness and realize our greatest potential in life.

As we journey through each day of this Trecena: 1 Men (Eagle), 2 Cib (Vulture/Owl), 3 Caban
(Earth), 4 Etznab (Flint), 5 Cauac (Storm), 6 Ahau (Sun/Flower/Light Lord), 7 Imix (Crocodile),
8 Ik (Wind), 9 Akbal (Night), 10 Kan (Lizard), 11 Chicchan (Serpent), 12 Cimi (Death/Transformation),
13 Manik (Deer/Healing Hand), utilize the energy of Eagle to achieve new heights in seeking
material and spiritual perfection.
At present, the year 2012 is only of interest to those of us who believe in the wisdom of ancient cultures. But soon, very soon, everyone is going to be looking for more information about this Mayan prophesied year of destiny, which many believe to be the end of the Mayan calendar and thus the end of time, as we have known it. Let’s look at this calendar and this specific date more closely.

Actually, it all began with a discovery that has been known for decades about the culture that invented what is known as the Long Count Calendar. On the Pacific coastal plain of Chiapas, Mexico, a few miles from the Guatemala border, the astrological observatory of the Izapa civilization was located. Some believe that the Izapa were the transitional culture between the older Olmec civilization and the emerging Maya; others believe the Izapa were the Olmecs.

For almost a thousand years the Izapa recorded the Long Count Calendar on monuments and ceramic vessels. Most of the dates refer to local, mundane events, like the crowning of a specific king. However, some of the Long Count monuments refer to mythological events that occurred at the beginning of the current “World Age” that we are living in and which is soon coming to an end. The Maya adopted the Izapa calendar, creation myths, and time cycles counting method.
