Ascended master :
A highly evolved non-physical being who has achieved "ascension", in that he no longer is obliged to incarnate in earthly form. Ascended Masters continue to help humans evolve in consciousness from their abode in the higher realms. Examples of ascended masters are St. Germain, Master Kuthumi (St. Francis), Lord Sananda (Jesus) and Lord Maitreya (Buddha)
Ascended masters are enlightened spiritual beings who once lived on earth just like we do. Over the course of many lifetimes of devotion and striving, they fulfilled their mission and reason for being—their divine plan—and ascended back to their divine source, reuniting with Spirit. Though they once had physical bodies like we wear, they now dwell in the heaven world, or etheric octave, and have bodies of light.
They come from every era, culture and religion, and they are united in what is called the “Great White Brotherhood.” The term “white” has nothing to do with race but instead refers to the tremendous white light surrounding their forms.
When ascended beings are entirely free of negative karma, they can choose where in the universe they would like to serve. They may choose to continue evolving with earth or to move on to other worlds. Many ascended masters have chosen to stay connected with souls on earth to guide them on the path of soul development and self-transcendence, which they themselves have fully achieved. They are the true teachers of mankind, directing the spiritual evolution of all those who desire to reunite with divine consciousness, or God.
The ascended masters work with us to show us the way to peace, truth and enlightenment. Some of them have spiritual retreats in the etheric octave surrounding the earth where we can go to study. We can travel to these retreats in our spiritual, or etheric, bodies while our physical bodies are asleep. The angels and Elohim also have etheric retreats where we can go to receive infusions of light, healing, blessing, correction and instruction that will help us in our daily life and in fulfilling our unique mission, our divine plan.

Originally presented by H. P. Blavatsky in the 1870s, the "Masters of Wisdom", "Mahatmas" or "Elder Brothers" were further developed by C. W. Leadbeater, Alice Bailey, Helena Roerich, Manly P. Hall, and many others in theosophy-based organizations, especially in the United States. They believe that Ascended Masters are individuals who were formerly embodied on the Earth and learned the lessons of life during their incarnations. They gained mastery over the limitations of the matter planes, balanced at least 51% of negative karma, and fulfilled their Dharma (Divine Plan). An Ascended Master, in such an understanding, has become God-like and a source of unconditional "Divine Love" to all life, and through the Ascension has united with his or her own "God Self", the "I AM Presence".
It is further claimed by various groups and teachers that the Ascended Masters serve as the teachers of mankind from the realms of Spirit, and that all people will eventually attain their Ascension and move forward in spiritual evolution beyond this planet. According to these teachings, they remain attentive to the spiritual needs of humanity, and act to inspire and motivate its spiritual growth. In many traditions and organizations, they are considered part of the Spiritual Hierarchy for Earth, and members of the Great Brotherhood of Light, also known as the Great White Lodge or Great White Brotherhood.
